The Key to good Communication

At our leadership meeting last week at #canacad, @kirstenwelbes shared with us strategies for successful communication.

The communication strategies included having a school “message house” that includes a few simple statements about what our school does:

  • We are making a difference in the lives of our students.
  • We are pushing the envelope of good practice.
  • We provide unique solutions to meet individual need.
  • We are stewarding resources and running an efficient organization.

All of our actions and initiatives as a school should be examples of how we meet the claims made in the message house.

With each new strategy or initiative, we should also have “talking points”.  A few small statements that clarify details about the action, anticipated outcomes, etc.

Finally, with each new event, action or strategy, we should make a communication plan. The communication plan should take into account the purpose, the audience, the message house, the times when community interest is highest, and how we will most effectively communicate the information over time.
